need to switch kernels

First off, I would like to apologize in advance if this topic has already been covered. Now that that's done, I have a problem. I have Mandrake 10.0 with 2.6.3 kernel. I also have a Conexant modem. Being cheap, I refuse to pay $14.95 for a linux driver. So, someone else on this site (very friendly, I might add) pointed me to a site with an old driver for 2.4.
There is a major problem: I can't figure out how to switch my kernel. Can someone help?

You can go to www.kernel.org and download the 2.4 kernel. Follow instructions to compile and install.

Or you can use a Linux distro that comes with a 2.4 kernel (e.g. Debian Sarge).
