can't open ports

Hi everyone:

I am using Mandrake 10.1 and my iptables -L is:

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Shouldn't this mean all ports are open?

I tried to open certain ports with the iptables command, but nmap always report them closed and I can't use their service.

I am logging as root. Is there certain situation that's prevents the port from openning.

I appreciate your help.

Lumba

Rarely, you might have a problem because of rules in tables besides “filter”. Try looking at the output of “iptables-save”.

Also, what you describe is common:
If you have ports filtered, they show up in nmap scans as being “filtered”. If you have something listening on an unfiltered port, it shows up as “open”. If you have nothing listening and no filtering, it shows up as “closed”.

iptables-save output:

# Generated by iptables-save v1.2.9 on Tue May 8 03:34:52 2007
*filter
:INPUT ACCEPT [20494:3018308]
:FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [26145:2213767]
COMMIT
# Completed on Tue May 8 03:34:52 2007

The closed port is 5060 which should have something listening

I did netstat and this is part of the output:

tcp 0 0 *:mysql *:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 *:https *:* LISTEN
udp 0 0 *:5060 *:*
udp 0 0 *:4569 *:*

port 4569 and 5060 has applications running and should be listening.

Any suggestion of what I might do.

Thanks
