Can't login as root

I upgraded my Mandy system to 8.2 and I have a little anoyance. I can't login as root to my box but /bin/su works fine !!! Has anyone experienced a similar problem?
Another thing, there is no shutdown in pull down menu in kdm/gdm. Is it normal? I have to shutdown the machine using the console.

Q1: what did you do before this happens?

Q2: I think you have to turn it on in KDE/Gnome as root. KDE> Control Center> Login Manager> Session> Console: Everybody.

Haven't done anything but plain upgrade from 8.1 to 8.2 poped in burnt CD, booted up, and upgraded the system. I even did a fresh install on my toy machine, the same result I can't login as root (incorrect login), only su (password for root entered) gives me root rights. As for shutdown I'll look at it, thanks.
Regards,
Neo

Nope, it ain't work, still can't login as root and shutdown is performed the same way /sbin/halt or any other variations, any more suggestions? I can't login as root into the system even in runlevel 3 (???)

Man, I can't even login locally, it sort of sucks, yeah that's true I selected higher security level when I upgraded, but I had no clue that I'd be bunned from my system, I can freely su into root, and work from there, but I can't login as root even in console. And shutdown, it is pretty sick not include it as an option in kdm/gdm. Well, I'll work it around, have an icon now on my desktop that powers off the machine. Anyway, thank you everyone who spent their time to look at my problem.

did you try renaming your /etc/securetty file to something else (/etc/securetty.org) and see what happens?
