Unhappy Can't get past 1.1TB on 1.7TB format RAID5!!!

I am setting up an "odd shaped" BM for Riken and I am
facing a problem:
e2fsck seems (that the best I can tell) to be crashing
when I am formatting one partition...
e2fsck is V1.19, on a 1.7TB SATA RAID5...
It seems to be getting major issues around the 1TB mark.

Is this something anyone has heard of? (the app is part of
RH 7.1, so I would be mildly surprised)
[or is it simply a bad HD that I have to locate?]
