built kernel locally...need to install to a remote machine. how?

I have recently built myself a kernel on my local test machine. now i need to install it on a remote machine.

do I need to copy the whole kernel build directory over to the remote machine or can i just copy over the arch/i386 directory over? If so what do I do from that point?

You need to copy some or all of the files in /boot and the entire directory tree in /lib/modules which contains the loadable kernel modules for your new kernel. You also will have to change the configuration file for your remote bootloader and perhaps change the Master Boot Record on your remote machine.
