Bootup hangs at INIT:Version 2.84 booting

Help Please!

I have a user running Red Hat 9.0 and this morning he rebooted the server due to "running slow". When it gets to the line 'INTI:Version 2.84 booting', it just hangs there. From what I have been told, no new code or hardware changes have taken place within the past month.

Any ideas?

How is it that a user can reboot the server?

Did the user do a proper shutdown and reboot, or just turn the power off, back on, and boot?

Is the server using a journaled installation of RH such as ext3 or reiserFS, or non-journaled such as ext2?

Have you tried running fsck on the un-mounted partition?

Turns out that it was a bad memory module.

My server experienced the same problem, after INIT: version 2.84 it hangs up.

The server using a journaled installation of RH, ext3-fs.

bigrigdriver can you help me out...
