Booting Live CD each time

Hi all - I know a bit about linux but when it comes to the Kernel and Scripts I am a total noob.

What I want to do is setup a system that boots a copy of a live CD each time - how might I be best to go about this?

PS - I intend to have a copy of the Live CD on my local HDD. If I make changes I will recompile, copy and then boot - at least this is my current plan and these are the first baby steps I want to take...

You can simply copy the iso file to the root of whichever Linux distribution you have and boot it if you have Grub2 installed with the Linux distribution. This works with most Ubuntu derivatives as well as Fedora. Might work with Debian and other, I haven't tried it. You could also boot with Grub Legacy but you would need a folder for the distribution, preferably in the root of the filesystem. You don't give any details as to which distribution you plan to use so more specifics are not possible.

I guess you could do something like a pendrive install. Take the steps from a flash drive install and fix loader.

Thanks.

yancek - I want to use a Linux distro that runs in RAM - so any live CD should do no? Specifically I was thinking of running either Slax, Tiny Core Linux or an Ubuntu Live Cd because of the ease of the Software center.

My learning is Debian based, I would use Puppy linux but don't like the idea of having to learn a different syntax for commands, plus the software center of Ubuntu is great. How difficult would it be to use Slax do you think?

one more question - how could I tell Grub to copy a distro in RAM and run it from there?

I was thinking along the lines of at boot creating a RAMdrive, copying the iso or other files/folders into it then calling the OS to run in the RAMdrive - would this basic idea work?

Nope. Most live CDs create a filesystem (unionfs and similar) whereby the disk and RAM appear to be as one. Your correct that Slax and Tiny Core do run entirely from RAM.

A bit dated.

Thanks for the link michaelk that is EXACTLY what I needed!

Do you mean the method described in the link is a bit dated?
