booting from SATA - gigabyte 7NNXP motherboard

Hi all,

I am having difficulties booting from a SATA HDD. I am looking to upgrade to kernel 2.6.0 (and use new matrox video drivers) and would like to be able to get the machine booting from hard disk rather than the temp solution of CD ROM I have been using (otherwise it will prove difficult).

I apparently have the correct bios settings on the motherboard but the MBR on the SATA drive is not being detected.

Has anyone encountered this?

Any suggestions?

My machine specs are:

Hardware
* AMD XP3000
* 512Mg RAM
* Gigabyte GA-7NNXP motherboard with nVidia nForce2 chipset
* Matrox P650
* Seagate 80Gb SATA drive

Software
* Debian linux unstable
* XFree86 version 4.2.1-11
* Kernal version 2.4.22
