bootable cd

can anyone tell me the step by step way to make a bootable cd. I tried the linux how to and it's not that clear to a beginner. I'm using xcdroast and when you pick "boot options" I picked the El Torito and it askes for a boot image. if it wants a boot image why does the how to make you a iso image. Also when i use the mkisofs -r -b boot/boot.img -c boot/boot.catalog -o bootcd.iso . it never creates the boot catalog. Then when I try to boot the CD it boots to a prompt that says boot: and its looking for a command or kernal. This is for redhat 8.0 and i just want to take a blank hard drive boot to the CD run and use some disk utilities off the CD. If some one can explain It would be great. thanks Dave!

You need to edit the boot image to boot the way you need. To edit the image you need to mount it as a loop device, then modify the files as you need.

Hope that helps ...
