Maybe I should explain a little more...

I can't change the startup scripts because the read/write option isn't enabled for single user mode and I can't log in any other way. (I know, I screwed up big time) Is there an easy fix? Or do I have to reinstall my distribution or completely wipe the drive and then reinstall, or what?

so are you saying you basically don't know root's password and you have disabled single user mode..
if that is the case, I think your basically screwed.

You can always boot from a linux 'demo' CD, or live file system CD then just use the mount command to make you normal root partition accessible and edit /etc/shadow to remove roots password entry (not the whole line though!!). You can often do this using install disks too.

cheers

Jamie...
