Hej !!

I burned a Debian Woody CD and installed it on my computer. I was supposed to dowload all the rest from the net and let Debian install it, but I decided to do everything myself. (-maybe I'll learn something that way )

I downloaded mpg123 and untarred it, but I wasn't able to install it.

When I typed the ./configure command, it didn't work. Later I found out that there wasn't even a manual entry for "configure". Same goes for "make", "make install" and "less"

erm... should I download these commands from somewhere and the install them on my system? Can anyone tell me where to find them? I ran a few google searches, but I couldn't find anything.

And once I have them, where should I place them?

And does anyone know what other useful commands might be missing?

"Configure" isn't a binary that lives in /usr/bin - it's a script that comes with the source code. It's sometimes got a slightly different name, such as "config".

When you un-tar'd mpg123, what files did it have in the main directory?

Ditto for 'make install' - make is a program which ought to come with your system, but "install" is simply a rule in the Makefile which comes with the code you untarred. make reads the local Makefile to find out what to do when you run the command.

If you haven't got the application make (use 'which make' to find that out) you'll need to first install it. Same goes for less.

What they said, plus install the development tools before you try to go any further.
