bash didn't recognize command "menuconfig"


I read the contents of the kconfig file in media:/sda2/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22-1-mepis-smp/drivers/ata, and since it started with "SATA/PATA driver configuration," I am trying to follow the instructions in it.

So I entered "menuconfig ATA," but bash didn't recognize that. Why not? Did I misunderstand this whole file, thinking these were commands I shouuld type when they weren't?

What you need to do is to either recompile your kernel to include this module (either as a module or built in to the kernel) or to install the module.

You don't run "menuconfig ATA", you run "make menuconfig". Then you go down to Device Drivers and find it from there. If you can't find it, post and I'll hold your hand.

Good for you! It compiles and then actually runs. It's not hard if you take your time. It's easier to find the ATA stuff if you run "make xconfig" (has a search function) but you will need qt and some other stuff, and I'm not up to leading you through dependencies at the moment.

Yeah, I guessed that compiling looked more intimidating than it is.

Running "make oldconfig" first is a good idea. That will create a .config based on your old settings. Then you just need to set new options (if you have a new kernel version) and the changes you want to make.

In other words, it backs up the settings?

Recent 2.6 kernels have a /proc/config.gz file that contains the settings for the running kernel. Running "make oldconfig" will use these settings and then prompt you for new features when you are upgrading your kernel. This will give you as close to your old settings as is possible with your new kernel. You might not be familiar with some of the settings being used, and especially if your interest is enabling or disabling a single module, this can be a great help.

I believe that's an option that has to be set in .config, though. It may or may not be set in the distro kernel.

On the Debian based distros, there is a copy of .config at /boot/config-<kernel name>. I usually just copy /boot/config-`uname -r` to .config before running make oldconfig. I've been told this feature is not available on the other distros.
