Question backup/verify files with tar

I want to backup files with the tar-command on a tape and verify them after backup. That's my way:

mt /dev/ht0 erase
tar c -f /dev/nht0 /home /[an so on]
mt /dev/nht0 eof 1
mt /dev/ht0 rewind

It's OK? - or completly mad?

My Problem is:
When I try to verify the backuped files with:

tar -d -f /dev/ht0

I got a Warningmessege vor every file like this:
tar: /home/...: Warning: Cannot stat: No such file or directory

What means this?? - And when I change one of the backuped files on the HDD to test the reaktion of the tar-command, nothing happend

Please help me
