Backup RedHat 7.2

What is a good tar or cpio syntax to use to get a good backup of the unix operating system. Something that can be restored easily if something happens. We use to have an AIX server that allowd you to have backup to tape the allowed the tape to be bootable for getting the server backup. Didn't know if Redhat had this or not. I'm just wanting to get a good backup of unix.

thanks.

hello,
i usually back up /usr/local/ , /etc/ and /home/ using tar e.g. tar -cf backupfile.tar /home.

one could backup everything with a tar -cf thewholething.tar / - but i would think in most cases this would be a huge file.
