backup: dump vs tar-bzip/gzip

Hi,
i'd like to backup a system with some VServers running. I thought of Amanda and Bacula, but temorarily rejected the idea, as i believed, that something simpler would do and it would also be helpful to start with the basics, ie the (1) dump utility or (2) tar-bzip/gzip. What's the positive and negative sides of these two? My main fear has to do with the fact, that (2) is something i use all the time, it may not have features of dump (like incremental backup), but is tried and tested, easier to use, etc, in contrast with (1). Suggestions?

I have always said tar is your friend? Tar can intermingle with other protocols easily ssh rsync ftp gzip. TAR is the mother. Amanda and Bacula are find but there isn't nothing they can do tar can't I bet.
