backspace key stops working

I'm working along in a terminal window and I go to use the back space key, which until that moment has been working as expected, and it will only backspace one character, it turns it into a capital and sounds the bell.

And every term in the session now exhibits the behavior.

The only way way I am able to get it back to normal is to reboot. Just logging out of the session won't do it.

The only clue I have is it seems to happen when I do some sort of mis-typing associated with either the command history, <esc> k or command complete <esc> /.

Any help understanding what's going would be great. It happens very rarely but having to reboot is not a good solution.

Thanks,
Rick
