On my Slackware 10.1 system with kernel 2.4.29 I recently installed the latest ATI drivers for my Radeon 9700 card. The install seemed to go fine but when I do an lsmod the 'fglrx' module that ATI installs isn't running. I tried to load it by hand with modprobe but I got some error messages. It at least finds the module but it can't load it.

I remember during the install that it asks if I want to use the external ATI driver or use the kernel's built in AGP gart. I picked the external option but I never got rid of the kernel's own AGP gart. I am wondering if I am supposed to recompile a new kernel without the kernel's built in AGP gart support and could that be a cause of the problem?

Did you run fglrxconfig after the installation?
