Thanks. Those are great tips. I didn't realize that you needed to run ldconfig after manually adding new packages. I really appreciate the help.

When building from source, if the package you are building depends on some library, you need to install the development package for the library, in addition to the runtime version (which is usually the only one installed on binary distros).

In SuSE I believe the development packages have a -devel suffix.

If you install a package from source, the "make install" script may run ldconfig if it installs its own libraries. It may also be run periodically in a cron script or when you boot up.

Normally you don't need to run ldconfig manually. Occasionally it is missed or perhaps a problem occurs during the installation.

Given that you said the library is present, this could be the case here.
