are scratches probably responsible for a liveCD going bad?

My MEPIS liveCD is scratched all over, because I'm clumsy and tend to drop discs easily. Is that the most likely reason why I am suddenly getting cloop error messages (I don't recall getting them before) and why the CD has recently been refusing to reinstall MEPIS on the same HD partition?
