apm -1 = no good

I have a brand new dell 2650 laptop with rh 7.3. It was a flawless install. It was better than a desktop install except one thing. I get a -1in my /proc/apm. How do i get the apmd to register my battery. I have looked everywhere for how to with no luck. I need something to tell me when it is about to die.

I can suspend my laptop with a apm --suspend command. But it does not recongize the battery status.
