Personally, I like LVM because it allows me to isolate various parts of my system on a lot of tiny virtual partitions. I can create these partitions really small and then easily grow them later when necessary.
The only downside I've ever experienced with LVM is that it has given me a few headaches occasionally related to kernel, initramfs, or boot loader configuration. My root partition is on LVM (and RAID) I often forget to include a relevant module or script line somewhere.
