Now that I have Samba running well and understand how to create directories to share and all. I want to go ahead and buy a bigger drive for the server. I plan on a 10GB drive. How can I do this in Linux without messing up anything? I know the hardware end of the install. I just need to know how I format it, and have RH recognize it has a hard drive. Thanks for any replies.
after you physically installed your new drive, linux will recognize the drive at boot up, if it is IDE drive it'll be hd* (* for letter a-z), now in console you can use cfdisk to format the new drive
just type
cfdisk /dev/hd* (* is for letter assigned to your new drive)
use your arrow buttons to navigate through menu at the buttom, you would want to create [New] and then as [Type] you would want to select 83 (linux native - ext2), then [Write] , and [Quit], then you can migrate to ext3 or raiserFS journaling system if you want to. http://www.redhat.com/support/wpaper...xt3/index.html

I'm looking to get a used one.
2nd hand? i'd never buy a second hand drive. that's just asking for trouble. currently it's not worth buying anything less than 40gb, as 40 is only about £15 ($25?) more than a 10. and unless you hate video or mp3 or something, you'll use it all up eventually. god knows my 80gb of storage could do with being 120 at least now.. good old broadband.
I've had good experiences with used computer hardware. I just want something for storage so I can get some hard drive space back on my main XP workstation.
