Question 8.3 Filenames on a USB-device

I searched the forum, but did not find a solution for my problem. This may depends on not-knowing what and where I should search for too.
So my problem is, that if I mount a usb-storage (usb-stick) with
Code:
mount -t msdos /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash
I can see and use the filesystem. But all filenames are the format 8.3 (filena~1.txt). I tried to use vfat instead of msdos, but then I even can not mount the device. How can I change this behaviour?

regards Fle><

(If there is someone who moves this thread into a more suitable topic, I am glad about that )

what error does appear when you try to mount it as vfat?
Maybe you should try to mount it without -t option.
Or you have some very old kernel

No block device or something like that

I'll try that later. Actually I have no possibility to do this.

2.6.12.5 - I think that is new enough

I think if yuo enable the hotplug service you don't need to mount it neither manually nor with the fstab. It'd be detected automatically, at least my system does this.
It recogize my usb stick automatically as a VFAT partition, this is the right file system for my stick, and I findall my long names with all the letters.
I use Mandriva 2005LE.

I tried mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, or too many mounted file systems
Same error occurs at mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash.
I looked at the system log and found an entry, that it is unable to load NLS-charset (iso8859-1).

gnome-volume-manager does this too. But it also mounts everytime my boot-partition and that I do not want. So I am going to disable it.
As far gnome-volume-manager can't mount usb-sticks on my computer

Now it works.
I recompiled the kernel with more Native Language Support i.e. 850, iso-8859-1 and iso-8859-15.
For the future I should read the log-files earlier
bye
