I recently resized my linux partition from within windows using Partition Magic. Now when I start my computer all it does is this :
L40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 {and it never stops...never!}. Did my MBR get overwritten? How can I fix this? THanks in advance for the help.
Try typing in at the boot prompt, linux root=/dev/hd??. Replace the ?? with the correct root ' / ' partition information. If it boots into linux, run /sbin/lilo. Reboot.
Similar thing just happened to me but instead of 40 mine was 10 10 10 10. At the boot prompt from the boot floppy type mount root=/dev/hda1 or wherever / partition is then ran /sbin/liloconfig and followed the instructions and now everything works.
I also got the same problem. This might happen ( as it happened to me) that your swap and boot partition is on primary partition and native or / partition on extended ( i may be wrong also).
But what you can do, if you have a boot floppy, boot using that and run /sbin/lilo . That could solve ur problem as it solved for me.
When you get just the L and a 2 digit error code it means that the main part of lilo has loaded but it cant find the 2nd stage bootloader: /boot/boot.b
