2.6-mm3 and multimedia key recognition problem

I have a Microsoft multimedia blue-and-white keyboard. You can find a link to it here.

In kernel 2.4, I can use xev to get all of the keypress codes for X, and translate them into commands (via xmodmap, etc). Not a problem. However, for 2.6, xev does not recognize these keys as events.

What changed in 2.6 as far as keyboards go? it's the same system, and the same keyboard. in 2.6, the keys don't seem to be recognized by X.
