Xmame install how-to

Hi i would like to use Xmame. I downloaded the last version on xmame and gxmame.
I am a newbie, and i usually used tar -xzvf - ./configure - make - make install for all tarballs i downloaded. In this case i do not think is the same. Does anybody explain me which is the right procedure? I tried to read the install file without understanding completely. Is it better to download a RPM version (if it exists) and install it with apt-get install?
Once installed how can i configure the roms? I have a cd of roms i used under windows. Are them ok for Linux too?
Thank you in advance.
Franco.

Re: Xmame install how-to

Um...I have completely deleted my earlier post. I downloaded gxmame & xmame-roms via apt-get on RH9. Then I had to download xmame-xgl from rpmfind.net. Every single game (whether I ran it as root or a regular user) told me it couldn't run the game because of missing files. I tried this for a couple of different games and got the same error every time.

Hi !!!

For xmame, go to the directory it was extracted and just type make and when it finishes (it'll take a while) make install (as root) and it should do it.

If you have apt-get, with:

apt-get install gxmame

You will get xmame with gui's just like in Winblows
