I can't decide whether to buy a game cube or *gasp* xbox so I don't have to deal with the "little or no support" Open Source gets for gaming.

The reason I'm looking into a game machine is UT2 (Unreal Tournament 2). They say there is no support for my video cards, which I thought would be by now, when I bought a bunch of ATI Radeon 9200's that are 8X AGP with 128MB DDR memory.

The more I think about xbox the sicker I become. It would be like drilling a hole in my head because I have a headache to get a xbox.... hrm.. forget that question.

Cube, Playstation2 or Linux.

Which do you think is the better way to go? Buy a game machine or configure Linux to play games?

Give me reasons why I should stay with Linux for gaming.....

Well, for my gaming needs I bought and modded XBOX and I must say it has been quite good purchase. For under 200 EURs (used XBOX for 100 EUR, chip job about 65 EUR and old 40GB HD) it's hard to get decent and fun gaming platform. Modded XBOX is such thing. :-)

Useful XBOX-related software like QWIX works with WINE and you can always try out to make XBOX as your Linux server. Also MPlayer works great... it's heart of XBox Media Center. So actually you get easy-to-use networked media theatre/gaming platform for under 200 EURs.

I wish I could run UT but according to the frame rates that i get with either the default radeon driver, ati radeon driver or even dri alone it's not enough to run Unreal Tournament. I thought by now that Linux would have real 3D acceleration since Microsoft finally got theirs fixed in like the year 2000 or was it 1999?! But I am wrong.. ATI still sux! And I bought like 4 ATI cards for my boxes.

Anyway, the XBOX thing I've heard other people fix up with Linux on it. I played Mortal Kombat 2 with some friends for a year on a XBOX years ago. I'm kinda partial to the Playstation2 though having worked for Sony awhile back.

I can play TORCS and FlightGear and Tux Racer and SuperTux and alot or 2D games but not 3D. Tux Racer works well in DRI but I still can't play UT2k4. Hexen II is running in 2D which is OK but I'd really like to play Quake III and Heretic on my system on day. I guess I need to build yet another system and this time with a real Linux supported video card in it which seems to be nVidia and NOT ATI.

Wait a few months for the next xbox, ironically propbably called the xbox next, or xbox 360 (which is a rubbish name), just type those names into google and you should get results. Just becuase its made by microsoft it doesnt mean its rubbish, and xbox live is the best online gaming service that i have ever used!
