trying to run Red Alert 2 through WINE ubuntu 10.10

ive been trying to get this game to work for some time now...ive lurked upon many other forums and got pretty close i think...where as i open the file go to the properties to the SETUP.EXE driver...in the "open with" tab i could tell it to run through wine...no problem...however, in the permissions tab i cant check off the box to "allow executing file as program" it gives me this

"Sorry, could not change the permissions of "Setup.exe": Error setting permissions: Read-only file system"

when i go owner access where it says its read-only...i try to change it to read and write and get the exact same error message...

ive also seen a few forums saying i need to install the game in windows first...but i dont have windows on my computer....just as a disclaimer

is there anything i can do?

Ah, Red Alert was my favorite game as a kid. Not sure I ever did play version 2 though.

Try OpenRA instead? http://openra.res0l.net/

yeah thanks man but that is open RA is just....just not the same...i found a way to get by downloading it on a windows computer, installing a crack and bringing the whole thing over to ubuntu....gonna give that a try...but red alert 2 was is indefinitely a game you should play if you haven't yet. let's hope this works though

If you open a program with wine you don't have to set the permissions of setup.exe to executable, since in this case wine is the executable that will then open and run setup.exe.
The times I used wine for gaming I always have done that from the command line with a simple
Code:
wine /path/to/setup.exe

the thing is...im not too sure that it's actually installed...i tried to install it the way i was told via other site (install it on windows, install the crack so it doesn't need to the disc to run, moving the entire directory to ubuntu, run it through wine) problem was, i couldn't install the game on windows because the game is too old or some odd reason...so instead i downloaded a torrent with the crack already installed...i have the .zip file...but i would think i should see Westwood or something when i look into wine...? im new with working wine and linux in general still...would that have made a difference? also should i be superuser?
