I have installed quake 2 and 4 lately and would like to install quake 1 as well.
The only place i can find it for download (not just the executable or shareware but including all the game data) is steam.
I would rather not bother with the irritating viral nature of steam, at least thats my experience of it on windows, but if thats an option to get a quake install i guess i will take it.
Is anyone playing original quake on linux using steam?

Why not just download the steam version, move the content and remove steam, the earilier iD games are not hard coded to steam, infact they don't require steam at all.
If you install steam with winetricks, then it installs Steam into ~/.local/share/wineprefixes/steam. After you install Steam, use Steam to install Quake, and then move Quake somewhere else, you can remove that entire directory.
