I managed to install the steam client on my redhat 9 box with wine.
I followed instructions here: linux-gamers.net/modules/wfsection/article.php?page=1&articleid=17
After installing, steam is updating (before i used the howto steam would not update). Everything perfect for now...
logging into steam account....ok
launching steam.......crash <=== "client callback thread error" see my console output
from here on wine starts a debugger and ends with following error message:
Steam.exe (main exception): WIN32 StructuredException at 42BF07F4:
attempt to execute an instruction whose operation is not allowed in the current machine mode.
a copy of my console output can be found there:
comarez.wankstaz.com/steamoutput.txt
Perhaps it is usefull for someone.
anyways if somebody's interested in Steam, u should give it a try and let people now
With some minds on it, we might be playing steam tomorrow.
how did you get that far? when i installed the CVS and ran it this came up [root@localhost Documents]# wine ie6setup.exe
Could not stat /floppy (No such file or directory), ignoring drive A:
Could not stat /root/.wine/${HOME} (No such file or directory), ignoring drive Y:
Drive Z: unknown drive type L"${CXOFFICE_DRIVE_TYPE_HACK}", defaulting to 'hd'.
Could not load graphics driver 'x11drv'
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization failed, status c0000142
those error messages aren't that bad. It's just another way for saying that your wine config file is not properly edited. U should edit the sections givin by the console output of wine.

edit drive A properly towards your linux configuration
ie: drive A
"PATH" = "/dev/fd0"
etcetera
i deleted drive Y & Z.

Im not familiar with those 2, thus i can not help u with it. I've just started with linux about 2 months ago, therefore i am also a n00b .
btw the wine config file is located under /home/..../.wine/conf or /root/.wine/conf if u have installed it as su.
oh wow nice link kudos but i have wineX 3.1 CVS, wont it conflict with wineX CVS? i had to uninstall wine CVS when i installed wineX because of these errors... or is wineX better? im so confused
i dont know sorry, all i know is this guy used the standard wine, not wineX, but if u read he has given up from steam after they updated it and it would no longer run. i dont know if it will run now or not. but good look on it.
okay, wine is installed and everything, i get steam running, i type in my login/pass and i get a error saying "could not connect to steam network This could be due to a problem with your internet connection, or with the steam network. Please visit www.steampowered.com for more info."
any way to fix this?
kupo check the console output.
It says it can't find rsabase.dll or something. I copied that file from my windoz partition to my 'System' folder under wine. then u are able to connect to steam network..... but here it crashes immediatly after connecting.
Im going to be using slackware linux as my OS. will i also be able to run steam on my system? i love cs. its my fav. game from all the others. it would be great to have it running on my slackware linux.
okay i got passed that little thing and now i can run steam but is till get the same "could not connect to steam HAHAHAHAHA IM VALVE AND IM ANTI-LINUX" error here is whats in my konsole
