SDL or Allegro for casual game development under Linux?

Hi guys

I'm interested in writing a very small, experimental game in my free time for use on Linux systems.

I have used Allegro years ago on DJGPP to write one or two DOS32 programs / games.

However, I've since seen a lot of projects (apparently including the most impressive DosBox) that use SDL.

Which one of these two libraries in your opinion would be the best for casual game development under Linux? I. e. it need not be cutting edge, very very fast or cross-platform (although cross-platform would be nice) but it must be reasonably easy to use and understand for a beginner / novice C programmer (like me!)

Thanks,

Either one is fine, here are some tutorials:

http://alleg.sourceforge.net/docs.html
http://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/t.../tutorial1.php
http://www.libsdl.org/tutorials.php

I've found that there are more tutorials on allegro than SDL, and allegro is somewhat easier to use, but SDL is just better quality.

This is one of the sempiternal vs. threads that you can find everywhere around in the net. I think that very little could be added that has not been said elsewhere.

It all depends on who you ask. Allegro seems to be slightly higher level which has both good and bad side effects. I only have experience with SDL so I can't give an objective opinion on the matter, just what I've been reading for years in the net.
