Scaling 1440x900 down to fit on a 1280x800 screen

I'm trying to get KoTOR to play nice on Debian Squeeze using Wine 1.3.10.
I've patched the executable and altered the ini file to get it to render in 1440x900, but it won't work wih anything smaller.
Is there a way to make Linux rescale it to my laptop's 1280x800 resolution before displaying it?
It's a Compaq nc6400, the graphics controller is an Intel 945 or similar.

Cheers
Col

2weeks & no replies, maybe it's time ask some silly questions & make some simplistic suggestions.
  1. Do you have access to another box w/ a better (i.e. higher res.) graphics card?

  2. Have you used KoTOR, presumably successfully, before?

  3. Tell us more about what we're dealing w/ here. -- What are:
    1. KoTOR?
    2. Compaq nc6400?
    3. Intel 945?
    4. "or similar"? -- we may need you to be exact.
Providing appropriate links saves every potential helper from duplicating your effort.

  4. "I've patched the executable" -- what did that involve, briefly.

  5. "... and altered the ini file" -- how many lines is the altered file? Please don't post it yet, just give an idea how how small or large it is.
