Red face Problem with tuxracer

My problem is a little frustrating.

I generally don't install games on linux. However, this time I installed tuxracer, but have a problem. It is, gr...., I can't seem to finish the third race in time. The time given is 30 secs, and I always seem to need atleast 33 secs to finish it. Did I miss any tricks. Please help me even if you think this is stupid, as this drives me to nuts..

You probably know this already, but you can jump by holding down 'e' and releasing when you want to jump.

Might make a difference somewhere.

(I've been playing Tuxracer for ages and I only found out about this a week ago!)

Well, I believe you are talking about the demo version (because the game is not free anymore, but the full version rocks). The trick to win at the demo, is to get all fishes and stop pressing forward after tux reach a certain speed, into the yellow bar (I think it's 60). Then, simply let tux slide. If you keep pressing forward, Tux will slow down, instead of getting speed. If your speedo bar get's lower then 60, then it's time to press forward again.
If you jump, press forward too to make Tux fly. It will get you a lot of speed while in the air. Don't jump all the time though, jump when you feel that you cat get really high, from a bridge or a mountain for example .

The full version of the game (expensive, but funny) has a lot of differences. You don't have to get all the fishes, which can be hard sometimes and you can also race against opponents, has more stages, characters to choose from ( a girl penguin, tux, a bear and another strange animal, lol) plus you are supporting Linux gaming, which is noble to do .

the other strange animal is a seal. as to completing that race, get yourself a cheap usb joypad controller. you'll be amazed at how much easier it is to play with. (i have also completed every board on the demo w/ keyboard. it just took awhile. lol)

Wow, thanks folks for the advice. I don't know about this jumping with e, and I always hold down the forward keys, and the max. speed I go is generally about 70. I'll try this tonight and post the results tomorrow.

Yea, I have the full version, and I use Neva more than the others. If she loses a race, I just hate to see her cry...........

Thanks for the tips. I have finally completed all the demo levels(well, only three), and I have enjoyed it to the core.

If I have any doubts in linux gaming, I know where to come now.

Thanks man. A seal heim It kinda looks like an old cartoon Mexican character for me with that mustache lol.
I'm with you about the joypad. USB pads in Linux works like a charm. I could never get a standard joypad-port to work though . With USB, even my PlayStation USB adapter works fine under Linux. It's cool to play Tuxracer with a PSone joypad (plus XMame games... Marvel Vs Capcom, lol).

I have a Gravis Game Pad Pro and a Gravis X-Terminator... but they all use game ports. Do they sell a convertor from gameport to USB?

Where do you get one of these Playstation to USB convertors? So I can go out there and buy a PS one joypad and buy the convertor and it will work on my computer???? Do the vibrate functions work?

Hi Micro420!!!!

I've got the USB adapter from Rockfire. It's called Rockfire PSX USB Bridge. Here you can see how it looks like:

http://www.clasohlson.se/images/prod...324050_Xw2.jpg

It comes with a program (as always, windows only) that let you get the vibration, even better then from the original PSone (It also works with PS2 pads). If you are unhappy with the "vibration force" you can increase it by using an external adapter. Both Analog and Digital Pads works fine, and so does PS wheels... It rocks

I could not get vibration function under Linux. But simply by typing

modprobe joydev

Makes it work smooth. Even cooler is, I've a wireless PSone pad, so I can use it as a remote control watching movies with mplayer (you can use joypad/sticks with mplayer).
If you look very well at the market, you may even find some adapters where you can get Nintendo64, Xbox, GameCube for USB devices . If you like PSone/2 pads, it's a must have. I dunno if you can buy from the shop I bought in Sweden:

http://www.clasohlson.se/

It was about 15USD, really, really worthy for both Linux and Windows

Just some few more details, I could not install the drivers for force feed back under WinXP (the one shipped with the adapter is a bit dated). Other then that, by simply putting the adapter into the USB device, WinXP sets it up perfectly and so does Linux (also without force feed back). No problems with win2k and force feed back. All emulators around (and I really am an emu freaky) works perfectly with both system (from atari and commodore up to N64 and GBA) . Buy one man, you won't regret it .

NOTE: There are some pages on the net who teaches you how to use old pads (from supernes or megadrive/genesis and N64/PSone). But you have to make the devices yourself. I've never tried. It's just too much work solving and buying a lot of tools to make a single device

Megaman, thanks for the information regarding the Playstation joypad. Gravis makes one that are similar to Playstation ones, however, the directional pad isn't separated like Playstation's. The circular motion that Gravis has kind of sucks. I don't understand why Gravis can't make a joystick EXACTLY like Playstations. THen, I would not have to buy all this convertor stuff. Disappointing.
