I messed with the sound to no avail.

I tried aoss civclient
Still not good.

I have sound because amarok works.

Any suggestions?

Did you build it from source or did you use a package?

I actually upgraded twice.

First upgrade:I used freeciv-2.1.5 from robby workman's slackbuild.
sound did'nt work

I removed that version.

Downloaded freeciv-2.1.6 from the website.
installed
./configure
make
(root) make install
sound still did'nt work
