New Game in the works

I am just out of collage I have a computer programming degree and want to create a video game. I have a great idea for the game but I don’t have the skills or the money to make my game a reality. I want this game to have both online and off line capabilities. The game will be a god/ monster breeder game to some, a first person shooter to others, a space sim, a role playing game depending how you want to play. But I need help. I don’t expect to make a profit off this or become famous. I am asking the Linux community because this project will be easer to build using Linux machines because of the low equipment requirement for most Linux distros. If any one wishes to get involved in this games design and/or testing you can email me @ computecguild@yahoo.com or reply to this post with suggestions.

Is this your first attempt to create a game? If so, don't even try to start such a big project as your first shot. Put it simple, you will simply fail. Start with something easier, try remaking a pong-like game, then move to some other thing as tetris, then some Space-Invaders. If you still haven't given up, try a 2D side-scrolling game. It's much tougher than one may think it is. I'm working on a side-scrolling right now in Java.

I don't want to burst your bubble, but starting something this big without previous experience is not possible, really. I've been trying to create games for the past 3-4 years and it's a huge challenge. My first project was also ambitious as yours and developing games is as much as an art as a challenge.

Start small, but keep thinking big. Get some books, read a bit about the available languages and API's, make a few simple games, you will learn a lot with them. While, for example, learning to create sprites for your space invaders game, think how you would use that knowledge to your big project later. When a few of yours games are done, then create a homepage, let peoples download them and sooner then you think, you will have a team with you.

Good luck!

I disagree with what you say. You don't need a lot of experience if it is going to be open source. I doubt Linus Torvalds wanted to make Linux run on the world's biggest supercomputers back in 1991, yet look at IBM's BlueGene/L. Even if he lays the groundwork for more experienced programmers to come in and do a lot of the coding, he has done something. And even if the project fails....oh well, so do most projects, look at sourceforge as an example.

I'd say give it a shot.

Maybe Linus did not have a lot of experience, but he had at least started coding. The above thread is very very vague about even which API should be used to develop the game. And remember that when Linus wrote the Linux kernel, he wanted to start simple. He was not at all ambitious like that. In his first e-mail to the community, he said it should not be anything serious.

Just like I said, start small. Good ideas everybody can have. To make then turn into something is the challenge.

I dont expect to be perfect

I dont expect to have this game avalible next week or even next year but i want to start it. I have many ideas for smaller games or aplications that will be made on the road to the final game such as a planet creator maby a beast craetor for some one elses game or a chariture genirator a random map maker or many things. I beleve if i aim big but expect nothing i will get somthing worth wille even if the game sux when i first play it it will be a work in progress. I have a web site
http://www.geocities.com/computecguild/
that is not perfect but has most of the current information and ideas and any one can leave an idea in my guest book if the want

thank you

jason

Suggestion, hook up with me on AIM: cybichu...

I'd love to join in the process of making the game, I'm fairly inexperienced with coding but I pick it up quickly Also, change your site to SourceForge... it's infinitely better than Geocities, and makes your game look more serious...

Heyho, the only linux game programmers I really know of is Loki and they released some sh*t hot games because they were good and knew what they were talking about. For this reason I recommend you buy this book http://www.tuxgames.com/details.cgi?...861&gameref=80 hope it helps and good luck with the game.

Compuguild, you are not really sure what you want? I mean what type of game or do you just want to brainstorm??? I too would like to be part of a game, but I am more of a strategy gammer than first person shooter. I like something like FreeCiv or Empire earth, real or turn base strategy games.

If you want to spend US$100 on getting an AAA engine that is cross platform and has a proven track record with good netcode etc look at www.garagegames.com

If you want to try something free first, look at irrlicht.sourceforge.net

That wouldn't allow him to keep the code open source though. If you license someone else's code, you can't then open source that code. Of course, if he doesn't care if the game is open source than it doesn't matter.
