My native linux games keep going from full screen, to a small window and freezes
Hi Guys, I have a problem which is really annoying.
I downloaded a couple of native linux games, 1 is called Urban Terror, and the other is called Enemy Territory. While playing these games, about 10 minutes into it, the screen will go from full size, to a small window. The game is still going when this happens, but i can't do anything. so i have to ctrl atl backspace and reboot it.
Can anybody PLEASEEEE help me?? i've googled for days and can't find a solution to my problem. Other games i have like Counterstrike source through wine work fine. help help help would be appreciated if anybody can solve this for me. oh, and im running ubuntu gutsy gibbon/amd64 with nvidia 7600.
thanks.
I did a bit of research and found out that installing a 32 bit linux distro
can solve alot of problems with compatibility and doesn't affect the performance on a 64 bit processor. hmmmm, i think i will try installing a 32 bit version of ubuntu instead of 64 and seeing if this solves my problem, but in the meantime.... if anybody has any other solutions or comments.... feel free
bah, doesn't anybody ever reply in forums these days???
anyways. i just installed kubuntu-desktop in terminal from ubuntu gutsy gibbon and it everything just seems to work in Kde. Seems like gnome isn't that great for stability when it comes to advanced games. Kubuntu rocks!
Probably people just don't get a problem like yours so they can't reply with proper answer. That's all. You could report it as gnome bug if it's really gnome related.
Hi!
I've got the same problem running ET:QW on Debian(Lenny) amd64 and GNOME. I'll check KDE today if you say it works for you, but still looking for solution to GNOME environment...
yeah man, i guarantee you that you won't have that problem in kde. I like gnome, but kde looks real nice, and more organised in my opinion.
if you decide to go kde, best to do it in terminal i found.
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
can sometimes be a bit of a buggy install doing it by synaptic i have found. but anyways. goodluck!
symon.
i have that same problem with Unreal tournemt 2k4,
this only happens when 3d desktop effects are on,
(it will go back to full screen and carry on working propally afetr a few seconds in which time you are likley to have been fraged)
try turning off effects (or use a diffenrt WM)
(i use Gnome with compiz normally but XFCE with no 3d for playing UT)
you may be right. it could be the default desktop effects in gnome that cause this problem.... hmmm, i don't have gnome anymore, so i can't test it. I found that the screen would go back to normal in UT, but not so lucky with other games like... urban terror, Enemy Territory Quake wars, Doom3, America's Army, etc. but anyways... i like Kde, im able to run Compiz and games at the same time without turning off anything, and without any stuff ups. Can't wait for Kde4 to be fully finished :d :d
Games in Wine and/or Cedega can be alt-tabbed (or use Scale plug-in for compiz fusion if using CF/Cedega) with Compiz Fusion or Metacity while something is fullscreen. This problem you're having is purely a Compiz / Metacity bug. More below:

While pretty much true (not technically, but in practice), that's unrelated to this issue.

Yeah... you're close! Kwin will handle the game much better than _Compiz Fusion_ will.

Please do. *Makes note to search and report one for Metacity *AND* Compiz after posting*

Actually, I wouldn't put it that far past KDE haha...

Your system must be pretty borked up if Synaptic is "a bit buggy." Installing KDE through Synaptic works fine (using the kubuntu-desktop package).

Actually it happens in Metacity, too. At least with Metacity you can alt-tab quickly (once your monitor blanks out, switching resolutions/refresh rates) so that you can be back in-game by the time it finishes changing (and thus able to play again). Chances are your input will get screwed and/or Xorg will get messed up with _Compiz Fusion_ running, should the game lock. Killing the game has only made things more painful for me. (Sometimes even ctrl+alt+f1 and back makes compiz fusion freak out to the point I have to ssh in and kill it -_-)

Yes. However, it's both metacity *and* CF. Too bad CF can cause a complete Xorg lock. And, it can f' up your input in general, completely disabling your machine until you ssh in and kill "compiz.real" (killall -9 compiz.real). -_- so if you must use one or the other, disable the desktop effects and use metacity to play.

Well, it still may happen running Compiz Fusion. I think you've been lucky so far
Now... where are those bugzillas... *grumbling about Metacity, CF and drivers*
EDIT: Try installing only kwin and maybe grabbing fusion-icon for ease of use (elsewise switch using windowmanagername --replace in the Run dialog... uh... like kwin --replace and metacity --replace) and switching to kwin from inside Gnome for games... if it stops happening, yeah... well... it should.

lol what is this...? correcting peoples opinions day? lol.
but anyways, i've been able to run games with compiz running in kde without any problems... unless the game resolution is the same as the desktop resolution... if it is, it will stuff up, otherwise it runs fine.
I've recently switched back to Gnome to give it a shot, as i feel that gnome/ubuntu has better hardware support for alot of things... and yes, turning off compiz or any desktop effects does make your games run normal without any stuff ups. Im glad, cause i like gnome, but didn't realise it was the default ubuntu desktop effects causing the problem at the time.
So Anyways... quote.... if anybody has games stuffing up on them like what i and a couple of other people have had recently, turn off Effects and all will be fine thanx for everybody's input
regards
Symon.

Sweet! I had the same thing happening in Metacity, though. And in KDE w/ Compiz Fusion...
@ correcting people's opinions: Errr... bugs are bugs, they aren't opinions. Forgive me for having a little bit of experience with the problem unlike the others, here. If you'd rather nobody tried to offer any advice, don't post.

EDIT: I played a few games using Compiz Fusion and Kwin last night and didn't have any problems. Hmmm... I wonder what it is about Gnome that makes that happen...
EDIT again: Also why I asked if you could install kwin and use it in Gnome... but oh well...
