Morrowind map is black

I got Morrowind up and running using Wine (not Cedega/WineX) by first installing it, then downloading the patch (1.207something). After downloading the patch I was *finally* able to play the game. Unfortunately I'm not on my Linux box right now so I can't give more specific details as to the exact Wine release and the patch number for Morrowind, but I'll get that to you soon.

Anyhow, the little map at the bottom right of the screen shows the arrow (character and which he's facing), the little squares (buildings), but the background is black. When I right-click the screen to view the map in its own window, I get a bigger arrow, no little squares, a black background with absolutely no detail of the terrain, and that's it. It doesn't matter if I toggle between World or Local views.

Anyone know of the fix for this? I'm going to play around more with the Gamma Correction settings and see if that's the problem but I don't think it is. Also, I set my menu transparency to None.

Thanks everyone.

Sorry it took so long, but here you go:

patch is 1.20722
wine version is 20050310 for the Slackware build (NOT Cedega/WineX)
running Slack 10.0
kernel is 2.4.22

How I got it working:

downloaded and installed wine
configured wine (copied a config file I found somewhere online)
configured it for Win98
ran the Morrowind setup.exe file from CD using wine
it installed fine, but it wouldn't load up when calling it:
Code:
wine .wine/c/Prog*/Beth*/Morr*/Morrowind.exe
googled around and found that you need to install the patch for it to work.
downloaded the Morrowind patch here
used wine to run the patch
ran ~/Morrowind.exe again with wine and it worked fine--except for the map

So does this mean we have to forego the use of the map in Morrowind? It doesn't work in Linux?

Not necessarily. It just means that I can't use it yet. The weird thing is that it is not black anymore (I haven't changed any configs or anything either). Rather than black, the images on the little map in the bottom right corner (and when you right-click to view the larger version) that your arrow (your character) moves over are actually residual images of the "Loading Morrowind.esm" or "Loading Exterior" screens at start up. It does, however, at least have the little beige colored boxes (on the small map only at the bottom right corner of your screen) that if you mouse over them will provide you the name of the place it represents. This helps out a lot--even if you can't see the actual land layout.

This could be caused by a problem with the coding and/or how it works with Wine or Linux, or it could be that I have only 128MB of RAM with a 64MB vid card. LOL I'm not sure yet. Hopefully others out there who have gotten Morrowind to install and play will be better able to answer this question or at least respond to say whether their maps work.

BTW, I just use the map that came with the game (the paper one).
