Making a Game, anyone want to help?

I want to make a MMO* with 2d graphics, i currently play Astonia 3, a great 2d game. I want to make something similar the same basic idea but better completely different story/look/feel to it, I want to make the sprites but i need some programmers to help make it possible let me know what you think of my idea, if you would like to join the project you can email me at rahbaseballdude@hotmail.com make the subject: Programmer. i have a few ideas for storyline and quests but i want it to be fun, and i want to make money off of it, it will be a challenge but i will enjoy it ALOT, a good grinding area for later leveling, i need someone to help make quests i don't want to do all the graphics, that will be hard, character sprites and npc sprites i can do easy, i have a few 2d games i can look at for a good base, i need someone to do the leveling system, work on skills and what to raise, fully customisable characters to see stuff like this i have in mind check out www.astonia.com good game but i want it better i'm tired of waiting for the next version to come out, this project will last a few years, i'm hoping we can beta test by 2009 or 2010, i don't know much programming myself but i'm learning, memorizing things stuff like that, i can also cover the website for later, i'm great with html and dreamweaver, i want this game to be amazing lets make it happen let me know

Edit: I also want this to be available in .tgz, .rpm, .deb, and .exe, but starting with .exe and moving on, the windows community is huge...unfortunatly they don't understand how much bill gates stole from linux, that is why i want to start there but i want this to be available to linux users everywhere, everyone should play it will be great, eventually move on to 3d graphics....in later versions but that will be years from now i like 2d games...old school and fun

You want to make money off it yet it seems you need other people to do about 80% of the work.... ok

You are also on a Linux forum wanting to produce windows binaries first...

Not trying to stifle your creativity, but i think you need to do a lot more thinking, and planning.

People are more likely to join a project if they see it's worthwhile, will run the course and can abide by a structure, without these things, doomed.

Perhaps there are some similar projects gathering dust that you can adopt/collaborate on, i am sure there must be some open source engines out there you can use, save yourself some work.

I will agree 100%..

But I want to add something.

1. I, too, am a programmer like many of the people on this forum. Who wants to make something like a game, a strategy or an MMRPG or lots of staff, and I have tried to fulfill many of those ideas... BELIEVE IT IS HARD.. and my attempts have been "disasterific"!!

2. If you want help say things like...: Make me a game so I can make money

3. You are reffering to a community, or most of it, fights for things like OPEN SOURCE! and you ask from not to do so, while you are showing signs of this belief too.

I might sound a bit aggresive, but I am not... I didn't mean to offend you in any way.

You have every right to want to make money from this..... but it will be easier if you just publish under GPL.

If you make such a decision let me know

GPL sounds great, i didn't originally plan charging users to play, at least for awhile, open source is way more appealing, i recieve plenty of free games/programs/just a little bit of everything from this community, giving back is not a problem, i don't expect this to get very big, and i want it to be a good game, that people like and play to have fun, for free, i donate money to slackware and kernel.org among other things, and donations would be great isn't that what open source is about? helping others? I guess what I'm meaning is, if you like it, you should help support it. I will do alot more planning, plan out quests, get a few sprites together, maybe a layout of a starting town or area and then repost in a few weeks or so, as for you PasteNoctem, I would love to have you on the team in the future, I will PM you at a later date with more information and what i have so far, the only real problem with making a free mmorpg is the server, costs could get high

I actually meant project planning... not the game detail elements...

He is right.. you have to have skilled programmers that can make the graphics, you should assign a project admin (except yourself of course) that knows how to plan and work together.

You need a server to put it on, but not to test it, so you don't have to think about servers.

If you meant donation when you said about making money, then ok!

And by the way I am beginning to get very interested in this project...

So I want to make a question to the programmers of the community ( ANYONE THERE??? :P ) if they know/can suggest in what language it would be more appropriate to write the code in :P

thx in advance

I don't know if I am a right person to speak here. I love C++ but, I haven't written code for any game ever.

I play a lot of games and quake3 is my favourite. Currently, I am trying my hands on Xmoto on SUSE 10.1.

I would also love to join but, I am not sure what knowledge is required to write a game however, I always wanted to be a game programmer.

The only thing one might need is his head creativity and logic, everything else will come...

But there are many things wanted like someone that knows very well to handle multiple theads and events also graphics.. the rest is a piece of cake

I would love to help, my game programming experience is about nil, but I can do pretty good Linux/General programming. (I suck at windows programming, haven't tried since Visual Studio 6.) If you don't need extreme graphics a good language might be Python since you could develop quickly. Plus python is pretty easy to translate into C++ for efficiency purposes.

Well it seems alot of people are interested in this project, it will take alot of free time and little or no income but it will totally be worth it, i fully support it as a linux only game under GPL email me at rahbaseballdude@hotmail.com and we can talk more

If you want to make a GPL MMORPG, you should also have a look at this site:
http://www.virtualcitizenship.org/
It started out as a campaign to open-source the MMORPG Ryzom and has now converted itself into some kind of site trying to centralize open-source MMO development, while still hoping to eventually be able to buy up an existing MMO and open-sourcing it.

Even if you don't want to participate in it, you may still find helpful information for your project on their forum and the wiki.

And maybe you'll find more MMO oriented programmers and storywriters there.
