is driver or card causing some 3-d games not to run?

I have installed the nvidia legacy driver for my tnt2 video card in suse 10.0. I can run tux racer or super tux with no problem, but I can not run penguin command or maelstrom. The games will try to start, then the screen goes to the desktop and all the icons look magnified. Since the desktop looks magnified, the task bar is out of sight. A reboot always brings the system back to normal, but I can not figure out why running the games causes this video problem. I have updated the kernel and source files before I installed the driver. The games were off the suse source cd set. Could I have a dependency conflict and if so, what files would I be missing?

No need to reboot your computer, just do Alt & Ctrl & Backspace to restart your X-Server. I've just installed both of those games and they run fine. Maelstrom runs in a window and Penguin Command runs full screen. Try adjusting your screen resolution to a smaller size and see if that helps.

You can also try starting penguin command in windowed mode from commandline with: penguin-command -w.

Does the last line indicate a bad memory simm?

Run the memtest utility (found on some distro cd's) and available for download from here: http://www.linux.org/apps/AppId_7360.html. A screenshot is available here: http://www.howtoforge.com/node/1102.
