intermitent sound problem with quake 3 and et

I finally got my video driver set up and now, I don't get sound in quake 3 or et. However, sometimes I do. quake 3 is currently giving me this error:

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
Received signal 11, exiting...

I don't have any other apps running and have seen people have this same problem. None of the solutions offered work. I am running mandrake 9.1 with kde. Sometimes, if I log out and then use gnome, the sound will work. When I logged into kde this morning quake fired right up. Now I get nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I believe this has something to do with ARTS or ESD. Check out this forum it may be answered there. If not start a new thread. The linux crowd there is quite helpful.

I have found a solution that works most of the time, I have to start the game using: artsdsp -m q3demo. Sometimes this doesn't even work though (after running max payne through winex). Then my only course of action is rebooting the machine.
