Cool Installing Civilization III complete

Hey everyone, I am a total beginner at linux in general ( I just figured out some networking problems and I'm now on the internet through linux.) I am probably more of a noob at gaming.

I hear that you can play windows games through linux
How can I do this so I can play Civlization III complete or Age of Mythology?

Cheers,
Michael

PS: Im running Suse 9,1

I only possess one Windows game - Civ III. I haven't been able to get it working on Linux either.

To run Windows programs in Linux, you need a program called Wine. It is included in the standard SuSE install.

However, for one reason or another, Wine isn't usually sufficient to run games. It certainly won't run Civ III as it stands.

There is an enhanced version of Wine, called Cedega (previously known as WineX), which is specifically aimed at gamers. A lot of games are reported to work with it, though I haven't heard anything specific about Civ III.

Cedega is a commercial product; to get the full version, you need to buy it from www.Transgaming.com. You can download it for free (as with any open source program), but the commercial version includes some additional libraries that aren't open source, which deal with things like some copy protection schemes, so you won't get the full benefit from the downloadable version.

I can't tell you whether Cedega will run Civ III, as I never bothered to download it -- I wasn't really that desperate to play Civilization to install Cedega specially for it, so I just left it. (I'm not a big gamer anyway)

So I've said a lot, but not given an actual answer to the question... If anyone can give a definitive answer as to whether Cedega (or anything else) will play Civ III, I'd also be interested.

http://www.transgaming.com/download.php

You'll need to register as a user before you can download it from from their site on that page (that doesn't mean you have to pay for it, though).

Alternatively, there are a few other threads on this forum that deal with the same issue - try this one: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=300975

By the way, while I was there, I also looked up on their site for Civ III, and it looks like it does work: Here's the link.

CivIII plays wonderfully in Linux, running Cedega (the 'paid for' version). There is a minor sound glitch where some of the sound effects start to repeat, and repeat, .... I just turn off sound effects, and play away.

I *doubt* you can get Civ3 working well with the "free" version of Cedega. It depends on DirectX9, which is only available in the subscrition version.

Is the paid version easy to install?
Is there a graphical installer?

Regards,
Michael

Well, I always used the mandrake rpms that were available. So in that sense, yes it was easy, and no, it wasn't really "graphical", unless you count double-clicking on the rpm package.

Ok, well since I have xp still installed, when I want to play I will just go on xp and do it there. I'm still going to try to get wine to run some other games though.

Regards,
Michael
