I'm not sure exactly what the problem it is your having, but all I had to do was download the .bin file and install it via ./[filename]. I have the latest nvidia patch, and I play the game regularly.

Linux, like any other operating system, will work perfectly if you install it and manage it correctly. It is a little more fragile than Windows, but when you have all your software installed ok it runs far better than any Windows OS I've ever worked on. It's also lightyears ahead of Windows with the fact that you can update ALL of your software (not just the critical updates for the OS) at the same time without having to visit a hundred websites to do it.

If your having that many problems with Linux, perhaps I could suggest using an easier distribution to manage, like Suse 9.1.

ive tried to install it that way"./filename.bin" but it would lock up during verifying archive integrity. and ive downloaded the bin from a few dif places. i reinstall mandrake after a format then DL'ed the bin and this time it made it past verifying, said "all good", then locked up during "uncompressing game files".
ctrl+alt+del dont do a thing at anytime, and each time it locks up nothing works.
is there something im missing, like a way to execute the bin minus the integrity check?

No problem man,
Just read again carefully howto install your driver...
It is the time to learn a little about linux..
But any way for installing nvidia do this.....
1.Download latest releas..from Nvida site..It is easy to find it..And I don't paste the url here..No I changed my idea fine:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-6111.html
download .sh driver..
2. log in as root and type in your terminal : "init 3"
of course without quat's
3. run the package by : sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run
follow instructoins, it is easy
4. restart you X just to be in gui...then goto and edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf as below:
see where is witten such a text : section modules.....
find it then add these two lines:
section modules
...
...
load "glx"
...
...
end section
and also see it there is such a text as " load Glcore" or " load dri" and then delete them...
4 restart your X by alt+ctrl+backspace
you are done..
and if you type in your terminal:
glxgears
It should show speedy gears!
that's all..
Cheers,
Ps about the signatrures of .sh files or .bin files first type in a terminal this :
export _POSIX2_VERSION=199209
then run american army..It should pur an icon on the menu...
Again Cheers,
Ask any difficulties,

It takes a very, very long time to verify archive.
Wait about half an hour.
that should do.
(thats how long it took me neway

Ok. I get that you are upset. But you need to remember that Linux is not designed to run these big graphical games. Not because we don't want them and not because it is not powerful enough of a machine to do it. The plain and simple fact is that the card creators and the game creators choose to not release enough information for us to port their games into a linux system. Instead they would like us to spend tons of $$ to support good ol' Bills need for $$. What I have found is that sometimes you need to do a lot of searching to get the answer you need. I am a newbie to linux. I just changed from windows. The only times that I have had my system crash where i have had to hit the reset button is in trying to set up and play a game like Rogue Spear, or Doom3. I am using Fedora Core 1 and I am about to change to Fedora Core 2. I have been on linux now for a whole 2 months. I have gotten other things to work and some that have not. I went from Shrike to Fedora just because I wanted to try a different distro. I Find that worknig in Linux is challenging and I get frustrated very much. Yes its not the easy one two three install that Windows has spent all that money in taking the work out for us. But If you know your system or try and learn more about your system. Then you make a backup of the file you are about to change. (i.e. cp <file name> <file name(number of backup if many)>.backup) After that it is easy to go back and fix a crash or a problem. I am using my system on a laptop Fujitsu FMV-biblio N50G. There are no drivers yet for many of hardware products from video to sound. I am learning how to work around it and see which settings let me do what i need. I am currently trying to play Rogue Spear. Well big suprise to me when the image has bars across it like teh vertical hold is off by a lot. I am currently experimenting with my X11 config files to see if i can match something that would work for both my system and my games. I have put some money into a book called Linux Bible. well not a lot considering it cost me $20.00 at Barnes and Noble. It guides you step by step through most of your system set up. Of course its not designed for a laptop. But that doesnt mean it wont run on one. I have been a member of this forum since I started using linux. People here have helped me with the most mundane questions like how do I fnid out about my hardware in my system. modprobe lsmod and such all the way to a top secrurity question about someoen trying to do a DDOS attack on my system. There is great things and a lot of knowledge and information on this board. It is the best one I have found. You just need to ask the questions for your answers. If I get this right there is a need to install Americas Army from a bin. That was answered with the chmod a+x <filename>.bin. Followed by the ./<filename>.bin. Next came on the creating an icon. you got several responses from the drag and drop to the more complex. I personally use the ln -s (symbolic link) command to get the base for the icon set up. Then I right click and choose an icon that suits me. You can make them yourself in Gimp I think. I will try and see what i can come up with. Next was the video card. which looks like it got answered with the changing of "nv" to nvidia" further up this thread. Also in the long post about X.org. In reading this post I am going to try some new settings on my laptop to see if i cant get a better configuration of the display to give myself a chance to play Rogue Spear. If anyone who reads this post would like to give me some ideas I have my question on the thread Rogue Spear. In games forum. Sorry for rambling and getting on my stump. But I feel that Linux has the chance and is surpasing windows in many issues. Games will come next if we work together and help each other out we will soon be able to take away the walls that allow straight game crossover whether you use linux windows mac or any other system i have left out for lack of full knowledge. Thank you all and remember I am just a newbie and I am just talking from the shor experience I have had of two months.

You might want to stick with windows.. no offense.. but linux is not for everyone. It does take time to learn how to work with it.
