gnuchess and X-windows

I just downloaded gnuchess and installed it under my Linux Red Hat 10 system. The documentation states that it can either be invoked with "gnuchess," which runs in text mode, or as "gnuchessx" which uses xboard to run it in graphic mode. (This is what I am assuming the documentation means, since it does not say precisely that). When I run it in text mode it runs fine. When I try to run it in graphics mode, it just sits there. (I think a window flashes and immediately disappears, but it is so quick that it is hard to tell). X-windows runs fine on my machine, so the problem appears to be with the use of it by gnuchess. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
