Gaming - what do u use eg TransGaming?

Hi

I want to get rid of Window$ completely and utterly, so I am thinking of buying one of those packages where I can run games natively on Linux. What do you guys recommend, I know there is transgaming and Codeweavers.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Regards,
Shelton.

Transgaming's Cedega is the very best thing you can get today to run Windows games in Linux. Still, you should check the compatibility list on their database first, before purchasing anything.

Codeweavers is not really made for games, but could run some... Wine is the free alternative which both Cedega and Crossover Office are built upon.

If you are a fanatic gamer, one of those who pre-order every game out there before their release, you are in for a big disappointment with Linux and Cedega, for now. In this case, keep on dual-booting.

Thanks

Here is a link for an unofficial Cedega gamelist:

http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.c...Category:Games

Apparently, Call of Duty 2 is untested and not officially supported (yet, it may work just fine, it just has not been added to the list). Your question regarding mods has one answer: maybe. Some mods are just a zipped file that you unpack on the same folder that the was installed. It's a very common way to distribute mods for the ID-software engines. This is most likely to work without a problem.

Other mods has some "neat" installers for Windows... this can be a problem, but most often then not, it works also. If Cedega fails to install this kind of mod, wine most likely will install correctly (you will still use cedega to run the game/mod though).

As you can see, no database will have all the games and what may work in one system may not work on another. The best way is to buy Cedega (which is quite cheap for such a good program) and try it out and see how your system will handle it.

If buying is not an option, you can try to compile the free CVS version too, but that does not include a lot of features and you may need to use a no-cd crack for most of your games. You can always try out with plain vanilla wine too...

I don't want to discourage you, but I've tried and tried and tried a little bit more to use Linux as a game machine. I ended up dual-booting with Windows for games.

Thanks Mega, are you a hardcore gamer or just one or two games - I mean why do you keep going into window$ for gaming ? - I am going to subscribe to Cadega when support for COD2 comes out, but for now this game will do for me:

Shelton.

Hi again shazam75!

I'm not that hardcore gamer. At least, not anymore. I love emulators actually . I have not had much time to play games lately though. Today I could play a little GTA - San Andreas. Apparently, San Andreas works well with Cedega, but I never tried.

There're some installers out there that will allow you to run a few games natively in Linux. Take a look into this site for a start:

http://icculus.org/~ravage/

By the way, truecombat looks like a sweet mod. Thanks for the link . Perhaps this week I can give it a whirl.

If you are into a few games only, then Cedega is definitely a good choice for you. But remember to check the compatibility list first

If I had more time to play games, today, perhaps, Linux would suit me completely. With great native games around, such as Doom 3, Ut2004 and Quake 4 (among many others) and Cedega around, I would be satisfied, I guess
