About 20 years ago Quake source code was released under the GPL.

I was copying some stuff over to a new box and ran across a 500 MB tarball of my old Quake stuff. Q1, Q2, GtkRadiant, all the bsp and vis tools, and a ton of community created levels. It all compiles and runs on Linux. I know because I used to do that sort of thing.

It was a really big thing when id software let it out. The first "real" game for Linux, and a big turning point for SDL and other projects. Some of the files date to July 12 1996.

I'd love to upload this tarball to a server share somewhere, if only for historic reasons. Any suggestions?

Up-to-date? Ha ha, yer funny. The ancient binary I compiled 15 years ago on a 486 runs great on my newish Arch box without any wrapper whatsoever.

If it weren't for John Carmack giving the source code to the community, Linux still might not have any decent games. He proved to everyone that you can still make money even if you give the source code away. In fact it increases revenue because the community surrounding the game increases to include all those hackers like me who like to build stuff more than blow stuff up.

So happy 20th Anniversary of GPL Quake!

Why not put it up on github or sourceforge.

Quake didn't use SDL. SDL was Loki.

Speaking of Quake, there was recently released a mission pack called Arcane Dimensions, which I hear is amazing.
