[SOLVED] Xorg configuration fails

I am on "Chapter 23. X Window System Environment" I have just finished compiling/installing all the necessary files and when I type "X -config ~/xorg.conf.new" but it says "EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found"

It says to check Xorg.0.log. Linuxquestions won't let me post the whole thing but the last part says:

This laptop currently runs two linux distros, no issues, so what might the problem be here?

Hi,

You mention being in chapter 23, which is kinda big..... I have to assume all went well up to and including 23 - Xorg Drivers and that you are stuck at 23 - X Window System Components.

Did you have any problems with these commands?

ln -vsf <$XORG_PREFIX> /usr/X11R6

cd ~ &&
Xorg -configure

<add to/edit xorg.conf.new> (did you do this??)

X -retro -config ~/xorg.conf.new

Can you post:
- the content of ~/xorg.conf.new
- the output of the following command: egrep "EE|WW|Modeli" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I installed the radeonhd driver and it works just fine now -- only problem is once X loads nothing opens and the images leave fragments slowly disintegrating after any movement...

Hi,

Glad to see you got this fixed...... Or isn't it? You mention that all works fine and that nothing opens, makes me wonder.

Anyway, if this is solved in your opinion, could you put up the solved flag (first post -> Thread tools)?
