You only need proprietary drivers for your video card, if you're lucky. If not (problems compiling drivers) you need a kernel from scratch, make defconfig and make menuconfig (look particularly for audio and ethernet); don't delete the kernel source directory,drivers need it. When you install drivers type "yes" when the installer asks for xorg.conf. If you will rebuild your kernel in the future you need to delete xorg.conf and reinstall the drivers. Copy your config is a good idea if something goes wrong.
