Sound when logged in as root but not as user

This is weird. When logged in as root, I can watch videos with firefox/flash via youtube, gametrailers and such. Play a movie with xine. Everything works fine.

Login as a user and xine disappears after startup. No sound with videos via firefox/flash.

Could this be some weird permissions thing?

Did you make yourself a member of the audio group?

There's such a thing as the audio group?! I just learned of a file called /etc/groups and there's even a video group but yet I have video. Being a Linux noob is so painful.
