Segmentation Fault in LFS, Chapter 5.4.1

When running the first command in the process of installing binutils:
Code:
patch -Np1 -i ../binutils-2.18-configure-1.patch
the only response is "Segmentation Fault". I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 as my host system. Any logs I should post to help find a solution to this?

On a whim, I tried looking at the man pages for 'patch' but got nothing. Curious, I tried running 'patch' entirely on it's own and still received a segmentation fault.

.
Suggest : uninstall 'patch', it is a separate package.

Restart the computer, so all traces of it has gone.

Then reinstall or better upgrade 'patch', if possible.

'patch' depends on libc.so.6 and ld-linux.so.2 ,
could it happen, that it doesn't like these files from
LFS, are they corrupt, are they in the path at all. ?
....
