out of memory- what that mean?


okw ell im not folowing the lfs instuctions exctly im trying to compile glibc for pas 1 (i tryed to skip this and just use the staic compiler to compile this but aparently glibc needs glibc in order to compile - dang what morons did that?) neways when i get to the step "make" it goes ... and teh stops not to far in it says out of memory , the source code and were im compiling to and in are in a partion that is 2 gb big i think (i 4get the exacct numbers) and teh compile is in a partion 300-500 mb big (scrap space at teh end ofmy drive jsut in case i need to put somonething ther like a compiler?. i was wondering if it ment ther was no drive space left or if it ment tehres no ram left

Sounds like you were out of RAM and swap space simultaneously. Try creating a swap file somewhere of a few hundred meg and enable it like:

mkswap /path/to/swapfile &&
swapon /path/to/your/swapfile

thx i have anotehr partions i can use a temp swap space (i was planing to encrypt it later tehn turn it into swap) it looks as if its working but if it fails again i guess i can upgrade to 128mb

well best not post in another thread but another error has acured this time in a fuction inside of uname.c it says it say it cant file file config-uname.h or somthing like that so it wont make cuse its missing the info in that file (by the names of the variables it listed id say its a file that says what kinda sysytem i got and such) ne1 know how to fix plz?
